Revolutions!

The Shrewsbury Wheelchair Netball Team.

It really doesn’t seem a year ago since we were holding our first taster session for the Shrewsbury Wheelchair Netball Club. We have a high profile because of the big publicity push we have done from the start. We have held demonstrations at the Shropshire Youth Games; the Dfest in Bridgnorth Shropshire is coming up soon. Radio interviews, newspapers and magazines articles. Links with hospitals schools and collages, it’s pretty hard to avoid us.

We now have a nucleus of players coming to training sessions and playing by High Five rules. The players have gained confidence as they challenge themselves to learn new skills in their new sports chairs that were purchased from a considerable amount of fundraising. We always put our players first and ensure that everyone is playing to their full potential. A training programme has been designed to focus on active participation in a safe environment. We have seen improvements at every training session.

We don’t know of any other Wheelchair Netball Clubs out there and have been looking for competition. Exciting times are ahead for us as we plan to take our game forward, we have challenged the Shrewsbury Netball League to matches and hope to start after Christmas.

Tina Owen and Leanne Willis are the coaches for this pioneering club, and are striving to be the best they can be. They have attended Sports Coach UK Coaching Disabled Performers and England Netball Disability courses. This has enabled us to develop positive and confident coaching manner while having fun in developing the physical, mental and social skills for the game we love. Shrewsbury Netball Club believes it is important that all players of all abilities are given the same opportunities to enjoy the stimulating game of netball.

This has been possibly the most challenging and time consuming project I have been involved with but when you witness the enjoyment and fulfilment of our players its all been worth it 

A big thank you to all the Sponsors, Players of Shropshire leagues who have donated money. Norfolk County Netball Association donated £244 raised at a tournament.
